Good afternoon, Europe and Mediterranean Area! Let’s take a look at the current synoptic situation for November 23, 2025.
A dominant high-pressure system is seated over the central Mediterranean, with a maximum sea-level pressure of just under 1030 hPa observed near the western edge of the domain. This is generating relatively calm conditions across much of the region. However, a low-pressure area is developing to the northwest, centered over the British Isles, bringing unsettled weather with it.
Cloud cover is quite variable across the region. The Mediterranean coastlines are experiencing significant cloudiness, with some areas reporting nearly complete sky cover, particularly in the eastern Mediterranean. Meanwhile, parts of the Iberian Peninsula and the western Mediterranean enjoy clearer skies, with cloud fractions dipping to minimal levels.
Temperature-wise, there’s a noticeable contrast. The Mediterranean basin remains mild, with temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius in Egypt, while colder air lies over central and eastern Europe, where temperatures drop below freezing in several locations, particularly in the higher terrains of the Alps and Carpathians.
At 500 hPa, the geopotential height pattern suggests a trough extending from the north into central Europe, supporting cooler and more unstable conditions in these areas. This is reflected in the relative humidity at 700 hPa, which shows dry air over much of the northwestern Mediterranean, indicating stable conditions, while moisture-laden air is present over the eastern parts, hinting at potential precipitation.
Wind speeds at 10 meters are generally moderate, with stronger winds observed over the North Sea and parts of the western Mediterranean, driven by the pressure gradient between the high and low-pressure systems. Meanwhile, calmer conditions prevail over the central and eastern Mediterranean.
Precipitation is scattered, with heavier rain and snow showers expected in the north, particularly over the British Isles and parts of central Europe, where some snow accumulation is likely. The Mediterranean is mostly dry, although some isolated showers may occur in the eastern regions.
Stay tuned for more updates, and enjoy your day!
